In Larimer County 33% of children grades K-12 receive free or reduced cost lunch at school. During the summermonths the Kids Cafe provides healthy, free, and delicious meals for children ages 3-18 at several locations throughout Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park, and Wellington. The Food Bank of Larimer County, supported by Feeding America, offers this program to make sure that children will not be left without consistent nutrition options when they are out of school. The Food Bank states, "With a full-time chef and registered dietitian on staff, the focus of Kids Cafe is on nutrition. Meals are cooked from scratch and exceed USDA and National School Lunch nutrition standards."
There are 11 Kids Cafe sites available throughout Larimer County that will serve breakfast, lunch, and some afternoon snacks. This service will run from June until the beginning of the school year in August. Kids Cafe combines healthy meals with fun activities that encourage wellness, exercise, nutrition education, reading, and positive self-esteem.
The Thompson School District will also be hosting 5 summer meal sites in Loveland. These locations will serve a nutritious breakfast and lunch to children age 18 months to 18 years old. They will be open Monday through Friday from June 1st until August 6th.
