Generation United Partner update:Boys &Girls Clubs of Larimer County
Over the past several months the Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County (BGCLC)have begun to instill a culture of academic achievement and success at all Club Units. A variety of adjustments have been made to programs, staff, and overall Club operations in order to set the precedent that being successful academically is crucial for future success. Below are several examples of how BGCLChave begun to foster a continual culture of academic success.
#1 Teen Specialists Hired:Starting on June 1st, BGCLC were able to hire two new Teen Specialists, one for the Loveland Unit and one for the Fort Collins Unit. These two new positions will be focused on teen programming in the areas of academic success, healthy lifestyles and character and citizenship.
#2 Power Hour Every Day:Each Club site implements a homework help program called, Power Hour. This program allows youth to bring their homework to the Club and receive additional assistance and tutoring from staff and volunteers. This program occurs daily at each site after school. Since September this program has served on average 55 youth per day after school.
#3. Teen Only Power Hour:This program is identical to Power Hour, described above, however, it is new this year a specifically set up for teens only. When teen Club members participate in this they have their own space with their own tutors and staff members to serve a helpers of the program. Since December (when this version started) this program serves on average of 17 youth each day.
#4 Hiring an Academic Specialist in Fort Collins:A new staff position has been created at our Fort Collins Unit. This position, previously, Education Director, now newly refined is our Academic Success Specialist. This position's main objective is to ensure that members who need academic assistance and enrichment the most are getting it while at the Club. Through, report cards parties, and strong communication with the schools this person can identify youth that are at risk of or are already falling behind in schools.
#5 Development of Prevention of Summer Learning Loss Curriculum:For the summer of 2014 BGCLC will be implementing prevention of summer learning curriculum that has been developed by the Club, based on feedback from curriculum specialists at both the Thompson and Poudre School Districts. Club staff have been in contact with School District Curriculum leaders, and have taken their advice and suggestions to create a curriculum that is unique and specific to schools that Club members are attending. For instance, in Poudre School District, it was suggested that the summer learning loss curriculum is developed around reading and literacy, thus, our Academic Specialist has begun to schedule in reading groups based on youth reading levels.
#6 College Fair:This winter our Loveland Unit designed and set up a college fair for teens and parents to come into the Club and speak to college representatives. Four colleges were in attendance and about25 different teens got a chance to come in and talk to college representatives.
#7 More transportation to Loveland Club:BGCLC in collaboration with Thompson School District have set up new bus routes that will take youth to the Boys & Girls Club in Loveland after school. So far ten new bus routes have been established all bussing to the Club from Title 1 schools.
#8 Putting an emphasis on graduation:At the beginning of the school year both Club locations held an “I Can Achieve Rally.” This rally serves as a kick start to kicking off the school year right. Youth all sign a pledge that states specific ways that they will work hard to achieve in school during the year. The kids also take a picture with their graduating class. The pictures are signed and framed and hung up in the Club all year so that youth always have a visual of when they will graduate.
#9 Setting a strong example of academic achievement and expectations:Additionally, we are setting a strong precedent that academic achievement is valued. This year in order to be in our Keystone Clubs, a leadership program for youth 14-18 years old, all members have to maintain a 2.0 average or higher. Similarly, to be a Jr. Staff, another teen program in which youth get paid to work at the Club, applicants have to be above a 2.0. Currently all of our active Jr. Staff are above a 2.0 and collaboratively have a GPA of 3.0. Additionally, a former Jr. Staff and now part time staff at our Wellington Unit was recently accepted to Arizona State University, to celebrate and promote post-secondary education the Club put on a celebration for her.
