Today, Holly is a college graduate who works as a mental health advocate for troubled youth. But only a few years ago, her path to graduation faced some big challenges.
As a single mother of 2-year old Scarlet, Holly was determined to give her daughter a better life and show her that anything is possible. She enrolled in college, but she needed to make sure Scarlet was taken care of while she went to school. Her low-paying job and lack of child support from Scarlet's dad made finding affordable and consistent childcare a major obstacle.
Holly applied for a childcare scholarship through United Way of Larimer County's WomenGive program.
“It was such a relief and an encouragement to see that there was a group of people in the community that wanted to help us (single moms) help ourselves,” Holly said. “When I received my acceptance letter, I was overwhelmed with joy. It was as if this piece of paper was saying, ‘We believe in you. We won't give up on you.'”
With the help of the scholarship, and using her daughter as inspiration, Holly was able to plow through the hardships. She could focus on completing her education knowing that her Scarlet was in a safe and nurturing environment. Holly graduated in the spring of 2014 with a degree in English.
Holly's success story is just one example of a larger community change taking place, thanks to your support of United Way of Larimer County. More than 200 women and 260 children are on the path to a more stable life and brighter future through United Way of Larimer County's WomenGive childcare scholarship program.
Holly herself said it best: “It is people like you who make the biggest differences in our lives, and there is not a day that goes by that I am not grateful for your kindness.”
