I moved to Fort Collins, Colorado from Carbondale, Illinois on July 31st,2014, exactly one day before my AmeriCorps start date. I had only been to Colorado once and I had never met my future supervisor or anyone from the AmeriCorps program. Despite the initial uncertainties, I was welcomed by everyone at AmeriCorps and was excited about the possibilities that my service term would bring.
I discovered the Colorado Reading Corps program through a search of position openings on the AmeriCorps website. Many of my friends had completed AmeriCorps service terms and praised their experiences as fun, inspiring, and life-affirming. After graduating from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor's in wildlife biology, I was looking for something fulfilling to do while I decided whether or not to pursue a Master's degree. The Colorado Reading Corps program based out of Larimer County satisfied all of my requirements for what I wanted to do next with my life.
Being a Colorado Reading Corps tutor has been very challenging and rewarding experience and has allowedme to be resourceful and creative with my tutoring. It has required that I be understanding, especially on days when I don't feel like being understanding. I've grown so attached to the kids at my host site that I know I will continuevolunteering at Cottonwood Plains Elementary School next year in some capacity or another.
Now that I have several months of service under my belt, I'm looking forward to finishing out the school year by being the best possible tutor I can be. I'm not sure what I will be doing come July, but I'm sure my AmeriCorps experience will help open doors which might previously have been closed to me.
