National Volunteer Month is upon us and it is sure to be a month full of volunteering and community engagement across the country. And while we may take this month to formally recognize volunteers and push volunteer projects, it is also important to recognize that volunteerism isn't just one day, week or month out of the year. Volunteers are a crucial part of any nonprofits success and their efforts are needed every day and there are many ways to get involved right here in our community.
Volunteerism is the sharing of our time and our talents in a collective effort to make a difference in the community. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, volunteerism is important because it helps us solve problems, strengthen communities, improve lives, connect with others and transform our own lives.
Board Bank - United Wayof Larimer County provides training for community professionals to serve as board and committee members for the many nonprofit organizations here in Larimer County. United Way's Board Bank program pairs volunteers to a variety of boards based on their individual interests so that the needs of local nonprofits canbe met. There are more than 80 nonprofits in Larimer County that need skilled, passionate and enthusiastic volunteers to serve on their boards of directors.
Make a Difference Day - Make a Difference Day is a nation-wide day of volunteerism and doing good in the community. In Larimer County, Make a Difference Day has become a week-long event due to its popularity and success. During the week of Make a Difference Day, there are a wide variety of projects for people of all ages and varying skill levels.
Volunteer Readers, Tutors and Mentors - United Way of Larimer County is seeking new volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to help children achieve academic success. Your local United Way is partnering with United Way's worldwide challenge to engage one millionnew volunteers as readers, tutors and mentors to help young people in our community reach their full potential.

Service To Go - If you are looking for an opportunity help the community butdon't have the time or resources to do a conventional service project, Service to Go may be a good option. Service to Go projects are easy DIY projects you can coordinate for your friends, co-workers or youth groups. United Way of Larimer County can help you find a project that best suits you and helps the community.
Volunteer Project Leaders - Volunteer Project Leaders (VPL) work directly with local nonprofit organizations to plan volunteer projects. Twice a year, United Way of Larimer County coordinates VPL projects where a VPL helps recruit volunteers and coordinate the day's events. A VPL helps make sure the project runs smoothly and helps a nonprofit organization fulfill its need for volunteers and resources.
Poverty Simulations - Living in poverty is a reality for many people here in Larimer County, and that doesn't just mean they are homeless living on the streets or shelters; it also includes many families who are struggling to get by. Through the online or in person poverty simulation you can learn what it's like to live in poverty. Participation in poverty simulations increases knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of poverty and the work it takes to achieve self-sufficiency.
Business Cares - United Way helps businesses, large and small, local and corporate, that want to engage employees in volunteerism through its Business Cares Program. Volunteer involvement strengthens a company's image, cultivates employee teamwork and leaves a lasting impact on our community. The Business Cares program helps businesses develop and implement strategic community outreach and volunteerism into their culture.
GIVE - A Gift to the Community Impact Fund supports United Way's volunteer engagement efforts to help people get involved in Larimer County.
