The 2017 Hurricane Season continues to affect millions of people in the United States, Puerto Rico, and surrounding areas. Hurricane Maria, the most powerful storm to hit U.S. Territory Puerto Rico in 89 years, has essentially left the island without power and water. As with Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, the scale of destruction exceeds local resources. To help Coloradoans better respond to those in need, Bohemian Foundation and Community Foundation of Northern Colorado offer Colorado’s Hurricane Recovery Fund, and United Way of Larimer County is providing text-to-give services to make donations as easy as possible.
Bohemian Foundation will match – dollar-for-dollar up to $3 million – gifts made by Colorado individuals, businesses and foundations to Colorado’s Hurricane Recovery Fund. This fund, established by the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado, will help nonprofit organizations address intermediate and long-term recovery needs in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, U.S. Territories, and other areas affected by hurricanes in the United States this fall.
Donations made to the fund by midnight on Nov. 1, 2017 are eligible for the match. This campaign constitutes an expansion of the NoCo Foundation Hurricane Harvey Recovery Fund, which was announced on Sept. 1 and matched only gifts made by Larimer and Weld County residents. With the growing impact of the 2017 hurricane season, Bohemian Foundation expanded the match from $2 million to $3 million and opened the campaign to all Colorado residents and organizations, including private foundations. The Community Foundation will not charge an administrative fee to this fund.

“This recovery fund allows Coloradoans to assist the thousands of individuals who have suffered from the devastating 2017 hurricane season,” said Pat Stryker, founder of Bohemian Foundation. “With this matching challenge, we invite all Coloradoans to double the impact of their giving. We know our generous Colorado communities will answer this challenge.”
The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado serves a unique leadership role in that it brings people and resources together around important issues. Charitable giving in response to a disaster can often be confusing and overwhelming, and the Community Foundation is a well-established steward of donations and is committed to deploying a thoughtful, responsible, and timely due diligence effort to the distribution of donor gifts.
