United Way of Larimer County (UWLC) is excited to celebrate 2022 Cornerstone Partner, Broadcom Inc., as part of a year-long series highlighting companies giving back in our community. Our Cornerstone Partners directly support critical day-to-day operations at UWLC, ensuring that 94% of all donor-designated gifts go directly to support local nonprofit programs. Broadcom is a Longs Peak Cornerstone Partner dedicated to supporting UWLC and the Larimer County community. Learn more about our Cornerstone Partner program here.
Every year, United Way of Larimer County mobilizes community members and corporate partners to give back during Days of Service. Make a Difference Day (October) and National Volunteer Month (April) help build capacity at local nonprofits, strengthen community ties, and support Corporate Social Responsibility efforts.
Broadcom’s Fort Collins location has supported the United Way of Larimer County since 2016 and is a community leader in corporate volunteerism. This past October, over sixty Broadcom employees participated in Make a Difference Day for twelve nonprofit volunteer projects across Larimer County.
With National Volunteer Month beginning on April 1st, UWLC staff connected with Broadcom to learn more about their corporate volunteerism commitment and share their strategies with like-minded companies seeking to give back.
UWLC: What drives Broadcom’s interest in employee volunteerism?
Broadcom: Employee volunteerism is part of our corporate ethos. It is important to us to engage with and support the local communities where we work and live. For us locally, we support philanthropic efforts such as promoting educational opportunities in STEM fields to help develop the next generation of engineers.
We also support local causes prioritized by our employees. Broadcom sponsors an employee gift matching program, where we match employee donations to causes that are near and dear to their heart. The Broadcom family is also proud to have supported many charitable global organizations, including the United Way, the Second Harvest Food Bank, and various prominent healthcare and medical research charities.
UWLC: How does Make a Difference Day align with Broadcom’s corporate citizenship goals?
Broadcom: Broadcom strives to be a positive influence in communities where we are based. The “Make a Difference Day” projects provide employees with a chance to help make a difference where they live and work. It also creates an opportunity for employees to learn more about local non-profit agencies that work tirelessly to make their community a better place.
UWLC: How do Broadcom team members benefit from volunteering during Make a Difference Day?
Broadcom: Key benefits include team building and networking with other like-minded individuals outside the workplace. It also provides our employees with a feeling of self-worth as well as a sense of satisfaction that they are strengthening the community in which they work, live, and raise their families. One member summed up his experiences as “I lower my blood pressure and make new friends— all while having a good time.”
UWLC: What suggestions does Broadcom have for other companies seeking to get involved in Days of Service?
Broadcom: Pick a project and just go for it. Volunteering is fun and provides a chance to interact with co-workers on a different level, which in turn helps when responding to new needs/demands/situations in the workplace. It doesn’t take a lot to get started— just get some coworkers together and see who is interested in which project.
When asked about his work with Broadcom, UWLC Director of Leadership Giving, Doug Hay, noted, “Broadcom is the ideal corporate partner, giving generously both of their time through volunteerism and their treasure through their annual employee giving campaign. Our community is stronger because of Broadcom’s consistent involvement and commitment.”
United Way of Larimer County is grateful for Broadcom’s efforts to give back to the community. We look forward to many more years of partnership to ensure that gifts of time, talent, and treasure meet today’s greatest needs— and tomorrow’s. Thank you, Broadcom!
